On Sunday, August 3, an annual memorial service was held in the Monastery of Kikkos according to the first president of the Republic of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios III.
The worship was led by Archbishop George in the presence of the President of the Republic Nicos Christolidis.
The Minister of Education, Sports and Youth Athena Michaelid made a speech, emphasizing that Makarios's heritage remains a guide for real and future generations. She also noted that the archbishop himself dreamed of seeing Cyprus free and prosperous.
After the liturgy, the tomb of the archbishop, located on the territory of the monastery, was reading prayer for the rest.
Wreaths at the memorial were entrusted on behalf of the President of the Republic - the Minister of Education, on behalf of the chairman of the parliament - deputy Alekos Trifonidis. The ceremony was also attended by the leaders of the parties wildly and Edek Nicholas Papadopulos and Nikos Anastasiu, the Euro -deputy from Akel Georgos Georgiu, the head of the delegation in the inter -parliamentary Assembly of Orthodox Panicos Leonid, representatives of the political parties, the Embassy of Greece, the National Guard, Eldyk and the police.
The memory of the archbishop was honored by family representatives, public councils and organizations. The ceremony ended with a minute of silence and the execution of the national anthem orchestra of the National Guard.
Archbishop Makarios died on August 3, 1977.
