After the success of the Cypriot film Find me Falling, the streaming service turned its attention to another product - a Cypriot series. Famagusta will be released on Netflix on September 20 this year.
On August 26, the director, producer and actor of the series Famagusta, Andreas Georgiou, announced the release on Netflix. It will be the second Cypriot film after the successful Find me Falling, which was acquired by the company.
The series Famagusta debuted on the Mega TV channel and on the company’s website on January 21, 2024. Since then, two seasons have been released, there are three in total: eight episodes each, 70-80 minutes. The third season will be presented this fall.
Since its release, the series has been very popular among the residents of Cyprus. The script was written by Vana Dimitriou and she is co-producing the film with director Andreas Georgiou.
The action takes place in Famagusta in 1974. During the attack of Turkish troops on the city, the girl Khristina with her infant child tries to hide from the bombing. After an explosion nearby, the girl falls and loses consciousness, and when she comes to, she discovers that the child has disappeared. Christina and her husband survived that time, but did not forget about the missing child.
50-year-old Cypriot Michael, who grew up in London, goes to Cyprus to make a documentary about the events of 1974. At the same time, he learns about his history. The series shows the fate of families, their relationships in those distant years and in the present day.
Cypriots were actively discussing the series during its production, as it touches on issues of concern to many who became refugees in 1974.
You can watch the series in Greek online.
