Cyprus became the second country in the European Union by the number of people working overtime, the Eurostat said.
According to data for 2024, 10% of workers on the island spend 49 hours or more per week at the main job. The situation is worse only in Greece (12.4%).
The average for the EU amounted to 6.6%, which is lower than in previous years: in 2014, this level reached 9.8%, and in 2019 - 8.4%.
After Cyprus, the ranking follows France with an indicator of 9.9%. The smallest values are recorded in Bulgaria (0.4%), Latvia (1%) and Lithuania (1.4%).
According to the Eurostat, among the self -employed, the share of operating overtime is significantly higher - 27.5%, while among hired workers it is only 3.4%.
Most of all, a long working day is widespread in agriculture, forestry and fishing - 26.2% of employees in this area work 49 hours or more per week. In second place are leaders (21.1%).
Eurostat notes that with high indicators in Cyprus, the situation still demonstrates a tendency to improve the EU scale.
