According to the Eurostat, published on Friday, July 18, the expected duration of working life in Cyprus reached 39 years, which significantly exceeds the average in the EU in 37.2 years in 2024.
This indicator reflects the average expected duration of time, which a person aged 15 years will spend the labor market.
Men in Cyprus, as expected, will work on average 41.6 years, while women - 36.3 years. Thus, the gender gap is 5.3 years.
For comparison, in neighboring Greece, the expected duration of working life remains significantly lower - 34.8 years. Men in Greece have been working on average for 36 years, and women are only 31.1 years old.
The difference of almost five years between the two countries emphasizes the more active participation of Cyprus in the labor market and a longer period of professional activity, especially among women. In the whole EU, men work an average of 39.2 years, and women - 35 years old.
Although the gender gap in the duration of working life has been slightly reduced over the past decade, in a number of countries it remains significant - for example, in Greece women have been working 4.9 years less than the average for the EU.
In Cyprus over the past 10 years, there has been a steady growth of this indicator. Despite the temporary decrease during the Covid-19 pandemic, the expected working life has increased from 37.7 years in 2021 to 39 years in 2023.
At the same time, the progress of Greece was insignificant: the indicators remain restrained due to the low level of employment of women and a high level of youth unemployment.
The leaders in the life expectancy of the EU are the Netherlands (43.8 years), Sweden (43), Denmark (42.5), Estonia (41.4), Ireland (40.4) and Germany (40 years).
The lowest indicators were recorded in Romania (32.7 years), Italy (32.8) and Bulgaria (34.8).
Women in Cyprus work longer than in many EU countries, but they are inferior, for example, Estonia, where this indicator reaches 42.2 years. Among men, Cyprus also shows good results, although it lags behind the Netherlands, where men work an average of 45.7 years.
In general, over the past ten years, the expectation of working life in the EU has increased by 2.4 years-from 34.8 years in 2014 to 37.2 years in 2024.
