Citizenship of Cyprus: advice of lawyers on accelerated and standard submission

Citizenship of Cyprus: advice of lawyers on accelerated and standard submission

What errors most often interfere with the finish line when receiving a Cyprus passport? Why is it important to document every trip, how not to “miss” the last year and why be friends with Cyprus families - read the abbreviation of a closed meeting with citizenship experts.

This meeting was organized for members of the Vestnik Premium level of the new Club of Vestnik Cyprus. The role of the moderator was Natalia Kardash, the editor -in -chief of the “Vestnik Cyprus”, an expert platform that not only publishes articles about Cyprus, but also helps to figure out how to act in certain situations. The interlocutors of Natalia were experienced lawyers Marilia Parashu and Andreas Menlau, specializing in the issues of immigration and naturalization.

New simplified procedure: for whom is she

Lawyers spoke about the changes that entered into force since 2023. According to the new scheme, highly qualified specialists can obtain Cyprus citizenship in an accelerated manner - over 5 years, and with good knowledge of the Greek language - even in 4 years. In both cases, it is required to live in the country continuously for the last year before applying. It is this year that the applicants raises many questions, especially those who are forced to travel beyond Cyprus for work.

“The law provides for an exception: the absence in the country is allowed within 90 days in the last year,” explained Marilia Parasha. “This is a reasonable compromise for business owners and company employees who, on duty, should regularly go on business trips.”

What do the formulas "3+1" and "4+1" mean

Often you can find the wording “3+1” or “4+1”. They mean that the applicant must live in the country for three or four years (depending on the level of the Greek language), and the latter - practically unchanged. It is in this last year that it is allowed to spend no more than 90 days abroad.

The standard scheme is still working

Along with the new procedure, the standard scheme for obtaining citizenship continues to operate - after 7 years of residence. However, as Andreas Menelau noted, this is not about the calendar years, but about accumulated days. “It is necessary to live in Cyprus 7 times 365 days over the past 10 years. That is, only 2555 days. And you need to be prepared to confirm your stay, especially if you changed your passport. In such cases, we advise you to make scans of all documents in advance and track trips, ”Andreas explained.

Practical advice from experts

Both lawyers emphasized the importance of documentary evidence of legal and continuous residence. When submitting an application, it will be necessary to provide the so -called “Statement of stay”, which indicates all trips abroad and the date of entry/exit. The date of entry is considered the day of stay in Cyprus, the date of departure is during the day outside Cyprus.

Why is it important "strategic communication"

At the end of the meeting, Natalia Kardash emphasized that obtaining citizenship is not only formal steps, but also a conscious process of integration into society. Therefore, the concept of “strategic non -playing” appeared in the title of the presentation. Understanding local realities, participation in the life of the community, language knowledge - all this increases the chances of successful naturalization. Experts advised to join the interest clubs (Cyprus dances, cooking, history, literature), as well as to establish communication with several Cyprus families. This will help in integration, which must be confirmed during an oral interview for citizenship, and in the study of the Greek language.
