Cyprus is the island of the scorching sun and beaches. It seems that it is impossible to find coolness here. But did you know that there are lakes on the island? These blue oases keep amazing secrets. They offer completely different landscapes.
Cyprus experiences an acute lack of fresh water, especially in the last arid years. Dams and reservoirs are built throughout the island. There are more than a hundred of them. Cypriots call them man -made seas. These places have become an important part of the ecosystem, they attract birds and give life to green valleys.
The largest reservoir is Kuris. It is located near Limassol. For the sake of its creation, the village of Alass was flooded. In the arid years, the ruins of the village church appear from under the water. This is a truly bewitching sight.
In January 2025, the Mavrokolimpos reservoir had to be completely drained after an emergency leak, which caused significant damage to the region’s agriculture.
Around many reservoirs, paths are laid. They are ideal for unhurried walks. It is especially beautiful here in the spring, when everything blooms.
In Cyprus there are also natural salty lakes. The most famous are in Larnaca and acrotiri. In summer, they dry almost completely and are covered with a crust of salt. And in winter a miracle happens. The lakes are filled with water and thousands of pink flamingos fly to them. They stay here until spring. This is one of the most beautiful natural phenomena of Cyprus.
Explore the water world of Cyprus. This is a great opportunity to see the island from the other side. Watch the birds, arrange a picnic, or just enjoy silence.
