Cyprus was among the countries of the European Union with the lowest expenses for family benefits, both per capita and as a percentage of general social expenses.
According to the Eurostat for 2022, Cyprus allocated only 277 euros per person for family benefits, occupying third place from the end in the EU rating, second only to Greece (264 euros) and Bulgaria (211 euros).
The average expenses for the EU are 830 euros per person, which is 46.7% more compared to 2012. However, in Cyprus, only 4.6% of the total social benefits are directed to support for families - the lowest indicator in the EU. While the average for the EU is 8.6%, countries such as Poland (15.6%), Luxembourg (14.8%) and Estonia (12.4%), invest much more in family programs.
These data indicate a significant lag of Cyprus from the average European level in the field of family policy, which can negatively affect the support of families and solve demographic problems in the future.
