Boris Demash was arrested for disrespect for the court

Boris Demash, founder and editor-in-chief of Cyprus Daily News, as well as related sites Cyprus-daily.news and Cynews.cc, was arrested in Cyprus. The arrest warrant was issued on June 23, 2025 by the Limassol County Court as part of the slander case associated with a large -scale misinformation campaign directed against entrepreneur Alexei Gubarev.

Before this, the court conducted a thorough investigation of a large-scale online campaign to discredit Gubarev’s reputation, based on the systematic distribution of false and harmful information through resources, the founder of which is Boris Demash. It was also noted that the Cyprus Daily News, which positions itself as an online publication about social and political life, is officially not registered in Pio (the Department of the Press and Information of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus).

The warrant was issued after Demash did not fulfill the conditions of a prohibitive court order made against him: he did not appear in the Limassol district court on the appointed date on the hearing on the case of disrespect for the court.

Demash, according to the documents attached to the case, is the main organizer of the information attack: he coordinated the spread of slanderous articles and statements through the network of anonymous sites. According to the materials of the court, these platforms regularly changed hosting providers, trying to evade the execution of court decisions in order to continue their activities, despite numerous decisions of the Cyprus of the Republic of Cyprus.

At the same time, Demash ignored the trial: he not only did not provide a single evidence in support of his publications, but also systematically avoided participation in the process, did not appear at the hearing. Such behavior, according to lawyers, clearly confirms that there is nothing for his accusations, for negative information about Gubarev, except for malicious slander.

After filing a lawsuit, the court issued a decision on blocking all sites involved in the discredit campaign, and ordered to immediately remove all offensive content. The court decision is a clear signal that the intentional distribution of misinformation on the Internet will have serious legal consequences.

The case remains under the consideration in the district court of Limassol.
