AUB Mediterraneo: a globally-ranked university in Paphos

The American University of Beirut – Mediterraneo (AUB Mediterraneo) is a twin campus of the American University of Beirut (AUB) in Beirut, Lebanon, and welcomed its first cohort of students in autumn 2023. AUB Mediterraneo is unique in Cyprus, offering an American-style liberal arts education that prepares students to become global citizens and critical thinkers.

Students from Cyprus have travelled to Lebanon to attend AUB in Beirut for generations. These alumni treasure their AUB experience, describing it as unique, engaging and transformative – both personally and professionally. With the establishment of AUB Mediterraneo in Paphos, this same transformative educational experience is now available in Cyprus.

Like AUB in Beirut, AUB Mediterraneo’s educational philosophy, standards and practices, based on the American liberal arts model, provide students with a broader and richer educational experience than they would typically get at a university in Europe.

The General Education Programme at AUB Mediterraneo includes a focus on ethics and civic engagement as part of the University’s mission to develop responsible citizens, committed to serving their communities. “AUB is known throughout the world for educating global citizen leaders – men and women who are committed to and engaged in their communities,” says AUB Mediterraneo Rector Wassim El Hajj. “This is what we aspire to do – and what we are already doing – at AUB Mediterraneo.”

The university boasts an internationally-diverse student body, which is attracted by AUB’s global reputation, the university’s rigorous and engaging degree programmes, its location in Cyprus, and the availability of generous financial assistance for the entire duration of study.

AUB Mediterraneo currently offers five undergraduate and two graduate (master’s) programmes: Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (BA); Psychology (BS); Computer Science (BS); Industrial Engineering (BS); Business Administration (BBA); Business Analytics (MS); Engineering Management (MS).

Courses offered at AUB Mediterraneo include both European and Middle Eastern perspectives, making them especially relevant and valuable for students from the region. The BBA in Management programme, for example, fosters an awareness of challenges in their broader context and explores the role of business in society, history, culture and ideology. This holistic approach encourages more creative, inventive and entrepreneurial thinking.

The Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) degree programme is another example. The first programme of its kind in Cyprus, and one of only very few in the EU, the PPE curriculum at AUB Mediterraneo offers courses in, for example, political thought, economic justice and policy analysis.

The University will be expanding its academic degree offerings in future years to offer, for example, an undergraduate engineering degree focusing on the environment or sustainability, a humanities degree focused on global studies, and an undergraduate degree in digital marketing. It will also be growing its student body with the goal of reaching 2,000 students in 10 years.

In autumn 2024, AUB Mediterraneo will welcome students to a new, stunning and sustainable campus in downtown Paphos, close to the sea.

All departments and programmes at AUB Mediterraneo are accredited by the Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation of Higher Education (CYQAA), and recognised in the United States.
