Deputy Mayor of Paphos Angelos Onisifor announced a “serious lack of staff” at the city’s airport and called for urgent measures.
The problem is related to SWISSPORT, serving about 90% of flights. According to him, the shortage of employees directly affects the quality of service, delays flights and damages the image of the pathos and all Cyprus as a tourist direction.
Onisifor emphasized that the SwissPort personnel are working in “wear”, forced to constantly go out on overtile shifts, which increases the risk of errors, delays and poses a threat to passengers' safety. According to him, the delays with baggage and service of flights became “daily”, and the number of complaints is growing both from the part of the passengers and from the company's employees.
Airlines have already sent written complaints to the Swissport head office in Zurich, which, according to Vice-mayor, demonstrates the seriousness of the situation.
“Swissport should immediately hire more employees, offering more competitive salaries and the best working conditions,” said to onisifor.
He also turned to the government with a call to liberalize the visa regime to attract workers from third countries. Earlier, the authorities have already amended by allowing students from abroad to work on an expanded list of professions.
Recall that the Minister of Labor Yannis Panayotu previously announced the creation of an advisory committee with the participation of the government, trade unions and employers who will deal with the issues of employment of foreigners to make up for the lack of labor.
According to the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the domestic labor market is no longer able to cover the demand of employers.
“There are no compatriots who are ready to work,” emphasized the general secretary of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Cyprus Filokypros Rusunidis. “Foreign employees remain the only source of labor.”
