Today marks the 20th anniversary of the fateful morning of August 14, 2005, when the passenger Boeing 737-31S “Helios”, following Larnaki to Prague with a landing in Athens, crashed in the Grammatiko mountainous area in Greece.
121 people were killed in the disaster, and Cyprus and Greece plunged into mourning.
Last Sunday, August 10, in the Cathedral of St. George in Paralymni, a memorial service for 16 dead, originally from this city, took place. On the same day, other memorial services organized by families of victims were held throughout the country.
On the eve of the evening of August 9, a memorial ceremony was held on Metropoleos Square in Paralymni: the townspeople lit 121 candles in memory of each of the 2005 died in the plane crash.
The memory of the victims is honestly honored in grammar, in the chapel of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, erected at the crash site. Family and friends gather here to pray for the rest of the shower of those who passed away so unfair and suddenly.
The tragedy of the Helios flight became one of the most difficult in the history of civil aviation of the region and left a deep mark in the hearts of Cypriots and Greeks. Today, after two decades, the memory of the dead remains alive, and the candles of sorrow are unquenchable.
