In the central prison of Nicosia, two investigations have begun at once - one from the police, the other on the part of the administration of the institution.
The reason was the complaint of the former prisoner who turned to the police last week, saying that in August two cellmates subjected him to sexual violence. According to sources, the man called the names of the alleged attackers, and his statement has already been recorded officially.
After receiving a complaint, investigators arrived in prison, where they conducted searches and interviewed prisoners who were in the same wing. Now law enforcement agencies are checking whether there were witnesses of the incident or one of the prisoners knew about him.
The two prisoners named in the complaint will be interrogated in the near future. The police also plans to conduct scientific and forensic examinations to verify the reliability of the charges. An important element of the investigation will be the study of records of surveillance cameras installed in the zone, where, according to the applicant, the incident occurred.
The prison administration conducts its own verification. The main goal is to find out under what conditions of violence could occur and why the security officers did not notice anything suspicious. Particular attention is paid to compliance with the rules of safety and the effectiveness of supervision of the concluded.
Experts intend to evaluate how current security protocols and observation systems meet modern standards, and to identify possible gaps that could contribute to the incident.
