On Wednesday, November 20, during a meeting of the Environment Committee of the Cyprus House of Representatives, AKEL Party MP Nikos Kettiros said that waste has been dumped into the salt lake in Akrotiri for a long time.
He emphasized that there is a possibility that cesspools with sewage were discharged into storm drains. This caused pollution of the lake and possibly even the sea.
“The Department of Environmental Protection told us that they have been investigating for a month now, but there are no results yet. I believe the review should be completed immediately. And its results have been presented to us for consideration, so that we are aware of whether the water or sea is polluted and who is responsible for it,” said the deputy.
Asked whether British bases were involved in the investigation, Kettiros said it had not been mentioned because the case concerned an area that was not part of their territory.
The debate on this issue started when MPs were discussing the progress of a program called Pandotira, which concerns measures to develop Natura protected natural areas.
As a result, the deputies decided to conduct a visit to Salt Lake in order to verify the statements of the representative of the AKEL party.
