In the northern part of Cyprus, the problem of child hunger is worsening.
According to Cansuu N. Nazli, a member of the Path of Independence party, in some schools children are losing consciousness due to hunger, which is a direct consequence of the economic crisis and the sharp rise in food prices. The politician appealed to the authorities to urgently organize free meals for all public school students.
The publication Özgür Gazete Kıbrıs quotes Nazli's statement, in which she emphasizes: the level of child poverty in the northern part of Cyprus has reached a critical level.
“It sounds like a dystopia, but we have to acknowledge reality,” she said. “We cannot turn a blind eye to the fact that children come to school hungry.”
Nazli called on the so-called “Ministry of Education” to cooperate with “social services” and municipalities to implement the free lunch program as soon as possible. According to her, access to healthy food is the basic right of every child, and ensuring this right is the responsibility of the state.
In addition, the politician proposed abolishing financial benefits and subsidies for private schools, directing the freed funds to support students in public educational institutions.
“Providing safe and nutritious food for children is not a luxury, but a duty of the state to society,” Nazly emphasized.
The situation with rising prices for food and fuel in the northern part of Cyprus is getting worse every month. According to local media, many families are forced to save on food, and school lunches are becoming an unaffordable luxury. In some areas, activists are already organizing charity events and fundraising to provide children with food, but social activists believe that a systemic government program is needed, not temporary solutions.
The problem of child hunger is becoming not only social, but also political, reflecting the ever deeper stratification of society. Local experts warn that if the situation does not change, this will lead to long-term consequences for the health and education of the younger generation.
