In Peyia, animal protection police have arrested a man after his dog was found in a trash bin in a critical condition.
The incident occurred on Thursday, January 16, when a local resident heard barking and discovered the animal in the trash, sealed in three bags.
The dog was immediately taken to a veterinary clinic, where she received the necessary care. Police crime prevention spokeswoman Nicoletta Tirimu said an arrest warrant had been issued for the dog's owner.
Peyia Mayor Marinos Lambrou and Environment and Animal Welfare Commissioner Antonia Theodosiou were notified of the incident by Simba Animal Aid chairperson Natasa Michaelidou, who initiated an appeal to the authorities asking for a thorough investigation. Theodosiou stressed the need to treat dogs like children and called for a swift investigation into the tragic incident.
The dog, about 10 years old, was in critical condition: she was emaciated and, according to preliminary data, suffered a stroke, presumably caused by shock. Veterinarians were able to identify the dog using a microchip, which allowed police to identify the owner.
Mayor Lambrou noted that penalties for cruelty to animals should be tougher. On Friday, the Cyprus Animal Party called for an immediate investigation into the incident by police, local authorities and veterinary services.
