On January 16, the Green Party carried out a rescue operation at a wastewater treatment plant in the village of Deftera (Nicosia district). During the event, two dogs were removed from the septic tank and found themselves in a deadly situation. One was injured and is now undergoing treatment, and the other, having escaped, immediately disappeared.
A local resident witnessed the emergency and immediately informed activists about what had happened. This made it possible to provide the necessary assistance to the animals in a timely manner. Activists who arrived to respond to the call inspected the territory and identified serious shortcomings in the safety system of the treatment facilities. According to them, such incidents occur regularly: dead dogs, cats and even foxes were found in the tanks.
The Green Party demanded that the Ministry of Agriculture explain the lack of necessary fencing at this dangerous site and take measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
“How is this possible? Who is responsible for this? We demand an immediate investigation and fencing of the area to ensure the protection of people and animals so that such incidents never happen again. We call on the President of Cyprus to take initiatives to ensure true animal welfare in Cyprus. If another animal dies in this tank, we will be talking about criminal negligence towards animals on the part of the state. We also expect the Commissioner for the Environment and Animal Welfare to ensure that no more dead animals are found in the said tank,” said members of the Green Party.
