On Friday, February 21, the Plenum of the Supreme Court rejected the appeal of the forensic expert Panicos Stavianos in the case of the 26-year-old National Guards Tanasis Nikolaos.
By its decision, the Supreme Court confirmed that the death of Nikolaos occurred as a result of a criminal act. The appeal of the forensic expert concerned the application for the issuance of a court order to cancel the conclusion of Doria Varosiot. The investigation came to the conclusion that the death of Nikolaos occurred as a result of strangulation, contrary to the initial assessment that it was suicide.
In his decision, the Plenum of the Supreme Court clearly indicated that the case was already considered by the full composition, and the final decision was made on December 18, 2024. He indicated that the correctness of this decision cannot be questioned, and the plenum itself cannot be involved in the appeal order.
In addition, the court said that the arguments of the Parties Stavrian do not contain any new elements that could lead to a different approach. The issue of resuming the case did not stand, since this case does not comply with the conditions established by the Decree of Democracy No. 1. Pullis ”(2001) 3 (b) A.A.D. 1060.
With this decision, the Plenum of the Supreme Court finally laid an end to the legal disputes around the death of Tanasis Nikolaos, confirming that it was a murder. This event is another step towards restoring justice in a case shocked by Cyprus society.
