In Larnaca, a scandal is flared up around the death of a 62-year-old woman with quadripalgia, who entered the department of emergency care of the city hospital.
According to the President of the Cyprus organization of Paraplegiks, Dimitris Lambrianidis, the patient was without a medical examination for more than eight hours, despite a serious condition.
The woman was taken to the reception department of the Larnak hospital on Monday at 8:30 in the morning. However, according to Lambrianidis, the first medical examination was carried out only after eight hours - and then only after persistent appeals of relatives. The initial examination was performed by the Pulmonologist attendant.
The next day, the patient was transferred to the pulmonological department, but by this time her condition has worsened significantly. At night, a woman had a heart stop. She was urgently transferred to the intensive care unit, where, according to relatives, she was left without oxygen for more than 20 minutes, which caused irreversible damage to vital organs.
The family has not yet received official data on the cause of death and a detailed explanation of how the patient's condition has reached a critical point. Dimitris Lambrianidis in his statement sharply criticized the work of the healthcare system, emphasizing that such delays in the reception rooms become the norm.
“How can the patient wait eight hours in an emergency department in a European country? How can we talk about a modern and generous healthcare system, if elementary safety and quality of medical care remains in question? ” - He wrote on social networks.
This tragic incident again raised the question of overloading hospitals and deficiencies in the General Healthcare System of Cyprus (Gesy). In recent months, public organizations increasingly record complaints about long -term queues, lack of specialists and delay in providing emergency assistance.
