In Cyprus, the situation around the migration issue again worsened.
At the center of temporary detention of migrants in Menoi, a hunger strike began: first it was declared four men, and two more days later two more joined them. Thus, the protest intensified, drawing attention to the problems of the legal system and the long time for waiting for decisions on migrant affairs.
The detainees claim that they are in the center from two months to two years, waiting for a final decision on their migration status. In their written statement, they appealed to the Deputy Minister for the migration of Cyprus to finally consider their cases.
According to the migrants themselves, a long -standing expectation without a clear perspective becomes unbearable. Some of them admit that they would prefer an official decision with deportation than uncertainty, which deprives them of hope for the future.
Participants in the hunger strike have hung out posters with inscriptions:
“This is not weakness, this is survival” “My tears say what I can’t” “my hands ask, and not threaten”
These phrases reflect despair and the desire to be heard. For many migrants, it is not only about legal status, but also about human dignity.
The situation is complicated by the fact that one of the participants who joined the action later suffers from a serious disease. In 2022, he was undergoing an operation on the lungs, after which the man experiences severe pain daily. He claims that in the center there is no access to the necessary medical care, which makes its position especially difficult.
According to the starving ones themselves, about 140 people are currently containing about 140 people, whom they call “illegally detained”, since decisions on their matters are delayed indefinitely.
