On September 6, a Russian businessman and shipowner Igor Grechushkin, who was associated with an explosion in Beirut in 2020, was arrested at the Sofia Airport in Sofia. He arrived there by a flight from Paphos.
The 48-year-old Grechushkin is accused of left the cargo of ammonium nitrate in Beirut Porto, which later caused a powerful explosion that claimed the lives of 218 people and left about 300,000 inhabitants without shelter.
According to Bulgaria police, a businessman living in Limassol, "did not resist arrest and collaborated with the investigation." The Sofia court decided to detain him for 40 days, during which the Livan authorities must provide documents for his extradition.
The deadly cargo - 2750 tons of ammonium nitrate - was confiscated by the Rhosus vessel, which belonged to Grechushkin, in 2014. The ship, which was following from Batumi to Mozambique under the Moldavian flag, was recognized as unsuitable for operation and was detained in Beirut.
The Lebanese judge also issued an arrest warrant of the captain of the vessel Boris Prokoshev, who previously criticized Grechushkin, but assigned the main responsibility for the tragedy of the Lebanese port.
The explosion in Beirut in August 2020 is considered one of the largest non -nuclear explosions in history.
