The European Environment Agency has compiledratingair quality, covering 372 EU cities. It is based on indicators of air pollution by particulate matter (PM2.5). The results of the two Cypriot cities included in the ranking were below average: Limassol ranked 286th and Nicosia 288th.
The agency's recommended maximum permissible level of concentration of PM2.5 particles in the air - up to 5 μg / cubic meter - was recorded only in 13 cities in Europe. The cleanest air is in the Swedish city of Uppsala (3.5). The air with the highest concentration of fine particles is in the Croatian city of Slavonski Brod (26.5).
In Limassol the level of particulate matter concentration is14 µg/cubic meter, in Nicosia -14.1.The indicators of Cyprus are significantly worsened by the proximity of Africa, from where southern winds bring dust with harmful particles, as well as smoke and ash from forest fires.
The study showed that75%Europeans live in cities where they are exposed to harmful particles. The agency notes that bringing air quality into line with World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations could significantly reduce the number of premature deaths.
