The Cyprus Student Coordination Committee (PSEM) has expressed its opposition to the ban on mobile phones in schools, while explaining why it did not take part in the protest organized by MEP Fidias Panayiotou on Tuesday 22 October.
The department noted that the ban on mobile phones, which it does not agree with, is just one of the problems faced by students, which PSEM will discuss at a meeting with the Minister of Education, which is scheduled for November 11.
In response to Mr. Panayot, who, according to PSEM, during an event he organized, said that students “had no voice,” which is why he did what he did, PSEM notes that students have a voice in the form of the Central Student Councils, District Student Coordination committees, Pan-Cyprus Student Coordination Committee.
Students elect their representatives. PSEM and students know how, when and why to organize protests and fight for their demands. They have proven this in practice.
In addition, the department noted that the MEP’s statement that members of PSEM did not want to take part in the protest is only half the truth. PSEM allegedly did not participate because “students and their elected bodies do not follow MPs and influencers. Students decide for themselves based on their personal opinion. Also, PSEM said that the organizers of the protest did not contact her in time to find out the students' opinions on this matter. The department emphasized that protests should not be of a random nature, they should have clear demands, and problems should be resolved collectively.
PSEM also expressed opposition to the mobile phone ban. However, they noted that this is not the only problem in schools.
“School infrastructure is in disrepair, lack of air conditioning, bullying, conservative work rules, hair and uniform hunting, authoritarian management, school transport, ban on mobile phones - these are our main problems,” PSEM said.
