In the afternoon, on Tuesday, September 9, in the Nicosia region there was a rare phenomenon for Cyprus - two tornadoes at once.
Powerful atmospheric vortices were formed in the south and south-west of the capital, passing over the areas of Lakatamiy and Anfopoli, where power outages were recorded. Eyewitnesses photographed unique personnel, which quickly spread in social networks and on meteorological portals.
According to local weather forecasters, both tornadoes were formed against the background of unstable air mass, reinforced by the contrast of temperatures between the warm sea and colder air in the upper layers of the atmosphere. The meteorological service warns that such phenomena can be accompanied by a squally wind, local flooding and a danger to transport.
At the time of passing the vortices in the metropolitan region, strong gusts of wind, heavy rains and thunderstorms were observed. In the mountain sections of Troodos, intense precipitation was recorded, and in the evening the rains spread to the central areas of the island.
Several streets in Lakatamia and Angopoli were left without electricity for several hours, the repair brigades of the company EAC quickly began to restore energy supply. At the moment, the victims are not registered, but residents are recommended to be careful and, if possible, avoid traveling to unsafe zones.
Forecasters expect unstable weather in the region until the end of the week. Local showers, thunderstorms and gusty wind are predicted, especially in coastal and mountainous areas. In this regard, the authorities recall the risk of sudden floods in the lowlands and ask the population to monitor the updates of the weather trucks.
