The authorities of Western Limassol opposed the organization of interception parking in the Agios Athanasios area. Transport Minister Alexis Vafiadis acknowledged the need to reconsider the plans.
During his visit to Limassol, Vafiadis met with representatives of the Agios Athanasios Area Industrial Association (SIVIAA) and the Mayor of East Limassol, Kyriakos Xydias. They assured the minister that there were many traffic problems in the area. They repeated their request to build another ingress and egress road here to ease traffic and offer a route for emergency services.
Association head Vasos Dimitriadis said park-and-ride in the area would only further hamper traffic flow. “We have over 5,000 employees who drive commercial vehicles and delivery trucks. And that’s not counting the daily visitors,” Dimitriadis noted.
Minister Vafiadis said they agreed to find a solution to reduce congestion in the area. “As a result of the meeting, it became clear what the real needs of the industrial zone are. We came to the conclusion that if we want to help, we must first take into account the interests of the workers in the industrial zone,” the transport minister told the Cyprus News Agency.
So far, only one park-and-ride project in Limassol has received confirmation - at the Tsirio Stadium.
