The European Commission will continue to do all it can to promote the Greece-Cyprus Great Sea Interconnector (GSI) project, said the European Commissioner for Energy and Housing, Dan Jorgensen
How was the meeting with the Minister of Energy and Trade of Cyprus, Mr. Papanastasiou?
It was a productive meeting with the Energy Ministers of Greece and Cyprus, as a follow-up to the teleconference we had in October.
What issues were raised?
We discussed key energy initiatives such as the Great Sea Interconnector, a project the EU strongly supports, including funding through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).
The 'Energy Avenues' initiative, announced by President von der Leyen in her State of the Union address, what exactly is it?
It includes the electrical interconnection of Cyprus with mainland Europe, thus ending the island's electrical isolation. The European Commission will continue to do everything it can to promote this project. I look forward to continuing to work with Greece and Cyprus to implement this in practice.
Why is better and stronger connectivity essential for the EU?
To reduce energy prices for our citizens and businesses and to ensure our energy independence. Better and improved connectivity is essential to lower energy prices and our independence. Energy Avenues are coming soon!
