Cypriot authorities are investigating the cause of mass fish deaths in Lake Athalassa.
Forestry department spokesman Loizos Constantinou said a similar incident was recorded three years ago. In his opinion, the reason could be the accumulation of large quantities of potentially toxic cyanobacteria in the lake.
Dead fish samples were collected for histological analysis, and water samples were sent for biological and chemical studies.
Relevant authorities, including veterinary authorities, water resources department, fisheries department, state general chemistry laboratory and environmental protection department, have been informed.
Work to remove the dead fish continues and authorities will monitor the situation throughout the weekend.
Test results are expected next week and should clarify the cause of the fish death. The forest department will continue to monitor the lake and surrounding area in the coming days.
