An 82-year-old resident of Mammari village was infected with West Nile virus!
Two weeks ago, the man was hospitalized in critical condition in a private hospital in Nicosia, where, after lengthy checks, doctors confirmed the disappointing diagnosis.
Meanwhile, among the villagers, who are trying to protect themselves from the infection by any means, there is discontent.
“We are, of course, worried. We are adults, but we also have children,” said the village residents.
Experts said there is no reason for concern. However, they noted that approximately 80% of patients do not experience any symptoms after being bitten by an infected mosquito, while almost 20% experience mild symptoms: fever, headache, malaise, gastroenteritis, which develop within 2-14 days after the first bite.
Experts reminded that the virus is not transmitted from person to person! Sporadic cases of West Nile virus are observed in Cyprus, mainly during the summer months. In particular, according to the Office of Epidemiological Surveillance and Infection Control, one case was registered in 2016, the same as in 2018. However, in 2019, the number of cases increased to 24. Source: alphanews.live
