Cyprus police have arrested a man suspected of a series of attacks on women in the Amathus area of Limassol.
The arrest follows a major investigation launched after reports of attacks caused serious concern among local residents. Police continue investigations to determine whether the detainee acted alone or had accomplices.
Anti-violence protest planned for November 2
Public concern has increased following numerous posts on social media in which women have reported incidents of harassment and assault along the Amathus coast. According to witnesses, the actual scale of the incidents may be more serious than previously reported.
In response to what is happening, residents of Limassol organized a peaceful protest, which will take place on Sunday, November 2, at 10:00 am. The march will begin at the Saint Raphael Hotel and end at the Four Seasons Hotel.
“We should not be afraid to walk the streets or return home at night. We have the right to safety, and it’s time to declare it,” the organizers said in a statement.
Protesters call on authorities to take additional security measures, including:
improving street lighting, installing CCTV cameras in dangerous areas, regular patrols, reviewing the ban on the use of self-defense means such as pepper spray.
