On Sunday morning, September 28, in Larnac, employees of the drug fighting department (YKAN) detained an 81-year-old man suspected of growing and storing cannabis. The operation was carried out pointwise, after receiving information about the possible illegal activity.
During a search of the house of an elderly man, two cannabis bushes were discovered and seized with a height of more than three meters, another plant in size of about 90 centimeters, as well as a batch of dried substance with a total weight of 118 grams. In addition, the police found a system for drying and processing the plant, which indicates a possible intention to establish regular production.
The man was arrested on the spot and placed in custody. Currently, it helps the investigation that should establish all the circumstances of the case. It has not yet been reported whether the criminal past had a previously detained and whether he acted alone or in cooperation with other persons.
Law enforcement officers emphasized that the investigation is ongoing, and new details will be published as confirmed data is received.
This operation has become part of the larger campaign of the Cyprus police to identify and suppress cases of illegal cultivation and distribution of drugs. According to the Cyprus Ministry of Internal Affairs, in recent years there has been an increase in the number of such cases, including arrests not only among young people, but also among elderly citizens, which indicates the expansion of the illegal market.
The authorities note that strict laws in relation to drugs are acting in Cyprus: serious prison and large fines are threatened for storage and cultivation of Cannabis. At the same time, the island is actively discussing the possibility of reforming the law and expanding the programs of Cannabis medical use, which causes public discussions.
