Limassol is recognized as the leader in alcohol consumption in Cyprus, and in the summer the amount of alcohol drunk increases ten times.
The study published in the journal Science of the Total Environment used to analyze wastewater to study daily alcohol consumption. The results showed that Limassol recorded the highest per capita consumption, exceeding Aiya Napa by 140% and Nikosia by 60%.
The study covered five city centers and revealed significant differences in alcohol consumption both on a temporary and geographical basis. On average, on weekends, consumption in the country increased by 40%. In summer, coastal tourist zones accounted for 78.4% per annum of alcohol consumption, while in the winter months this number was reduced to 21.6%.
The highest rates were recorded in peak tourist periods, when consumption reached 51.18 ml per day per resident in coastal areas. In Nicosia, the structure of consumption remained more stable during the year, with fluctuations from 0.31 to 10.60 ml per day per resident.
International comparisons showed that, despite the high summer rates, the level of consumption in Cyprus remains relatively low. This study conducted by Cyprus and European scientists under the leadership of the Environmental Chemistry Laboratory of Cyprus Technological University emphasizes the importance of using wastewater analysis to assess real levels of consumption.
