Air conditioning in schools is being installed late

Only at the very beginning of the school year did they begin to conclude contracts for the installation of air conditioners in schools. The Ministry of Education believes that by the school year they will have time to install air conditioning in 50 schools throughout Cyprus.

Not all regions are progressing equally. The Chairman of the Union of Parents of Secondary School Students, Loizos Konstantinou, said in the SPOR program that only Nicosia schools fulfill their obligations on time, Limassol schools are catching up. And in other regions almost nothing was done in the summer.

Loizos Constantinou believes that even half of the 50 schools will not cope by the start of school. And in addition to the first educational institutions, there are another 450 in line to install air conditioners.

According to school inspectors, ten schools in Nicosia are installing air conditioning. In five of them, work is almost completed, another five will be completed by September 10.

In Limassol, contracts have been signed for five of the ten announced schools, and work has begun. The remaining five are in the process of signing documents with contractors, the work is planned to be completed by October 10.

In Larnaca, only this week contracts were concluded with contractors; the installation of air conditioners will take place in October.

In the free areas of Famagusta, contractors have been found for three out of 12 schools, and in Paphos, contractors have not yet been found for ten schools.

In Nicosia, school leaders are now selecting the next ten institutions to carry out the work. The choice is made based on criteria such as geographic location, temperature and humidity, and electrical system capabilities.

Some schools do not have a Cyprus Electricity Company substation nearby, although they require air conditioning. The Cyprus Electricity Authority has received information about such schools, but the construction of substations near them could take up to 24 months.

How it all began

The need to equip schools with air conditioning was discussed at the end of the last school year, when children suffered from stuffiness and heat in classrooms. However, virtually nothing was done over the summer. What delays and difficulties arose, read the link.
