Yellow warning

Yellow warning

Rains, which will be intense and prolonged in places, combined with isolated storms are expected to affect mainly the southwestern half of the island. Locally, due to the prolonged rains, the amounts of rain are likely to reach or exceed 70 millimeters in a 24-hour period mainly in the southwestern 1/2 of the Troodos mountain range, while the amounts of rain are likely to reach or even exceed 55 millimeters in a 24-hour period in lowland and coastal areas mainly in the southwestern 1/2 of the island.

Due to the high levels of rain expected locally on the island, temporary and small-scale problems are likely to arise mainly in the road network due to accumulation of water or hail on the road surface, isolated landslides in the mountains and temporary overflows of rivers and streams. It is also possible to observe transient and small-scale flooding phenomena, power outages, damage to agricultural crops or even to light constructions, while the public is invited to be informed about the weather conditions that prevail in the case of outdoor activities without, however, requiring their cancellation, unless the weather conditions can affect them or if there are risks.

Valid from: 21:00 EST, 30/12/2025. Until 21:00 CET, 31/12/2025

Yellow warning for strong to gusty winds with gusty to very gusty winds. Be informed!

Strong to strong southwesterly winds with gusty to very gusty winds are expected to affect the island during the first half of the warning, while strong to strong northwesterly winds with gusty to very gusty winds are expected during the second half of the warning. Wind gusts during the warning will at times and locally reach 8-9 Beaufort on windward coasts, windward mountain/semi-mountains and mountain tops.

Due to the windy to very windy gusts that are expected to affect our area, problems are likely to arise mainly on the road network, due to felling of trees or objects carried by the wind, power outages and damage to agricultural crops or light structures, while the public is asked to be especially careful not to put themselves in danger.

Valid from: 00:00 T.O., 31/12/2025. Until 19:00 CET, 01/01/2026

Yellow Warning for dense fog and reduced visibility in the mountains. Be informed!

During the warning period, fog is expected to prevail in mountainous areas of the island. The fog will be very dense in places and at times, reducing visibility, which in some cases will be very limited to zero.

Drivers are asked to be especially careful in foggy areas, drive at low speeds, keep a safe distance from vehicles in front and keep their vehicle's headlights on.

Valid from: 21:00 EST, 30/12/2025. Until 21:00 CET, 31/12/2025

Yellow Warning for excessive rainfall. Be Aware!

Periods of heavy and rather prolonged rain, embedded with isolated heavy thunderstorms are expected to affect mainly the southwestern 1/2 of the Island. Rainfall totals of 70mm or over within a 24 hour period are locally possible mainly over the southwestern 1/2 of Troodos mountain range, whereas rainfall totals of 55mm or over within a 24 hour period are locally possible over plain and coastal areas mainly over the southwestern 1/2 of the Island.

There is a possibility that bad weather could cause temporary and minor disruptions mainly on the road network due to water and/or hail accumulations, isolated land slides over the mountains and brief overflow of rivers and streams. Localized minor flooding, interruption to power and damage to agricultural crops or to light structures may also occur. The public is advised to stay informed about the weather when engaging in outdoor activities. There is no need to cancel such activities unless weather conditions are likely to affect them or pose safety risks.

Valid from 21:00 LT, 30/12/2025. Till: 21:00 LT 31/12/2025

Yellow Warning issued for strong breeze to near gale force winds with gale force to strong gale force gusts. Be aware!

Strong breeze to near gale force southwesterly winds with gale force to strong gale force gusts are expected to affect the Island during the first half of the warning period, with strong breeze to near gale force northwesterly winds and gale force to strong gale force gusts expected during the second half of the warning period. Gale force to strong gale force winds 8-9 Bft are expected locally and at times mainly over the windward coasts, windward areas of the high ground and mountain tops.

Due to the gale force to strong gale forece gusts that are expected to affect the Island, travel disruption might locally occur from downed trees and flying debris, which may lead to power outages and damage to buildings and vehicles, as well as damage to agricultural crops or to light structures.

Valid from 00:00 LT, 31/12/2025. Till: 19:00 LT 01/01/2026

Issued at: 16:30 LT, 30/12/2025

Yellow warning for dense fog and low visibility. Be Aware!

During the warning period, fog is expected over the high ground. Fog will locally be dense at times, making visibility very poor.

Drivers are advised to be especially careful in areas where fog is present, drive at low speeds, have their headlights on and keep a safe distance from the vehicles ahead.

Valid from 21:00 LT, 30/12/2025. Till: 21:00 LT 31/12/2025

What does "yellow warning" mean?

The "Yellow" danger level means that the weather is potentially dangerous and the weather events predicted are not unusual. The public is encouraged to continue with their daily lives as normal, however caution is needed regarding activities that are exposed to weather hazards.

In particular, in areas where the above phenomena are ongoing, citizens are invited to:

• To secure objects which, if carried away by severe weather conditions, may cause damage or injury.

• Avoid passing under large trees, under posted signs and generally in areas where light objects (eg pots, broken glass etc.) can become detached and fall to the ground (eg under balconies).

• Avoid outdoor work and activities in marine and coastal areas during severe weather events.

• Avoid crossing rivers and streams, on foot or by vehicle, during storms and rainfall, but also for several hours after the end of their event.

• To follow the police announcements of the road network.

Driving on wet roads hides many pitfalls and dangers, which is why vehicle drivers must always be alert and completely focused on the road. For our own safety, so that we do not find ourselves in unpleasant situations, it is good to take the following preventive measures:

1. We make sure that our vehicle's windshield wipers are not worn and that there is enough water in the tank to wash the windshield.

2. Preparing for a trip in the rain requires careful use of all the vehicle's main control points – steering, clutch, brakes and accelerator – as well as a greater margin of safety for possible mistakes and emergencies. When we start a trip in the rain, our shoes will be wet and easily slip off the pedals. We rub the soles of our shoes on the floor of the car before starting the engine of our vehicle. We check that the main lights, rear lights, brake lights and orange direction indicators (turn signals) work normally.

3. Rain makes the road slippery. Especially at the beginning of the rain, the roads can become very slippery.

4. We check our vehicle's tires before we hit the road. We make sure that the tires have both the prescribed tread depth and the correct pressure. The regular depth in the tread grooves helps prevent skidding and aquaplaning.

5. We turn on the headlights and drive carefully for as long as the limited visibility lasts.

6. Closed windows during rain quickly lead to fogging of the windows, we use the air conditioning system to clean the windows.

7. In residential areas, we pay particular attention to pedestrians moving or waiting on a sidewalk. Defensive driving means that we anticipate dangers that may suddenly appear on the road network. For example, it is possible for any pedestrian on a sidewalk to slip and fall into the street, taking us by surprise. The prevention of traffic accidents with defensive driving is achieved by anticipating such incidents, so we reduce speed when we pass through points where pedestrians are moving on the road network.

8. We slow down, driving at a reduced speed allows the vehicle's tire tread to be in contact with the road for longer, which leads to better traction. We maintain a greater safety distance from the car in front.

9. In the rain, overtaking other vehicles requires a lot of attention, because calculating the speed of other cars is more difficult and sudden lane change can lead to loss of control of our car.

10. We avoid going through moving water unless we can have a wider view of the environment. Heavy rain is likely to form flash floods, which can become extremely dangerous.

11. Before each of our movements, we are informed about the situation prevailing on the road network.

Weather Warnings are presented in three categories:

A. YELLOW WARNING – Be Aware: YELLOW weather warnings are issued to warn those who are at risk, based on their location and/or activity, in order for them to take preventive action. It should be noted that YELLOW weather warnings are issued for weather conditions that will not pose an immediate threat to the general population, but only to those who are exposed to those weather conditions.

B. ORANGE WARNING – Be Prepared: ORANGE weather warnings are issued for weather conditions that will likely impact people significantly. It should be noted that ORANGE weather warnings mean that the general population should prepare themselves for the weather conditions that are expected and should avoid any outdoor activities.

C. RED WARNING – Take Action: RED weather warnings are issued mainly for rare or extreme weather events, which means that the general population must take action to protect themselves and/or their properties.
