Members of the Pan-Cyprus Transport Union Category A, part of the General Confederation POVEC, announced the start of an indefinite strike from November 3, 2025. The decision was made unanimously at the General Assembly of the trade union and was a continuation of the protest actions that began on October 7.
Reasons and requirements of Cypriot carriers
In an official statement, the union notes that carriers have been facing serious problems for years that the authorities have not solved. Among them:
the need to change legislation prohibiting the use of fog lights; adjusting standards regarding permissible truck heights; amending the fuser body law so that it is not illegal when open without side light markings.
The union also draws attention to other problems in the industry:
illegal purchases of fuel in occupied areas; the use of heating diesel by some carriers, creating unfair competition; long delays in loading and unloading at ports caused by the actions of their operators; failure to comply with agreements restricting access to port areas for unlicensed carriers.
“All these issues create an unfair and unprofitable situation for carriers, which the state should have resolved. Without legislative changes, every driver is effectively outside the law, risking loss of insurance coverage and facing legal consequences,” the statement said.
The union emphasizes that similar reforms have long been implemented in all EU countries, and Cyprus is obliged to bring its regulations into line with European standards.
The organization calls on all carriers to contact union leadership or POWEC for up-to-date information and coordination during the strike.
