The Cyprus Meteorological Service is preparing to issue official weather warnings in connection with the approach of a powerful atmospheric front, which will begin to affect the island from the evening of Tuesday, December 30.
According to forecasters, in the coming hours a sharp increase in wind and a gradual deterioration in weather conditions is expected, which will affect almost all regions of the country.
In the afternoon on Tuesday, the wind will begin to increase noticeably and by the evening it will move into the zone of very strong air currents. Gusts reaching storm-force levels are possible on the coast. Already at night, localized rains and thunderstorms are expected, which will begin in the west of the island and by Wednesday will spread throughout Cyprus. Forecasters warn of prolonged and intense rainfall, which may be accompanied by accumulation of water on roads and temporary flooding in low-lying areas.
Experts pay special attention to mountainous areas. In the high mountain areas of Troodos, snow and sleet are possible, as well as short-term hail during thunderstorm fronts. Such conditions create increased risks for drivers and tourists planning trips to mountain villages or observation decks on holidays.
The sky will gradually become cloudy throughout Tuesday, with isolated scattered showers possible in western areas. Temperatures will rise to 14 degrees in inland areas, around 16 degrees on the coast and around 6 degrees in the highlands. Wednesday is expected to be mostly cloudy with showers and isolated thunderstorms, and snow on the Troodos peaks.
On New Year's Eve and the first day of 2026, weather conditions will remain unstable. Partly cloudy skies and isolated showers are expected, especially in the western part of the island. By Friday the weather will begin to gradually improve and become mostly clear. Forecasters do not predict significant temperature fluctuations - the indicators will remain within the seasonal norm.
Taking into account the active tourist season and New Year's trips, authorities recommend planning routes in advance, monitoring weather service updates and being prepared for temporary traffic restrictions in mountainous areas. Increased wind and rough seas can also affect boat trips and port operations, so tourists should check with carriers and tour operators for information.
Thus, the beginning of 2026 in Cyprus will be marked by cool and unstable weather, which may make adjustments to holiday plans, but at the same time remind of the true winter nature of the island climate.
