The official representative of the Cyprus Government Konstantinos Letimbiotis announced the abandonment of the proposed assistance by the administration of the occupied north of the island to combat large -scale forest fires in the Limassol region.
At a briefing in the presidential palace, Letimbiotis explained that the proposal for help from the leader of the Turkish-kiprot Turks Ersin Tatar was transferred through the UN intermediary, but the Cyprus side decided to reject it.
“We have enough ground forces. The main need is now in aviation support, ”said the government representative.
Instead, the Republic of Cyprus activated the European civil protection mechanism, receiving air support from Jordan, Egypt, Israel and Spain. Currently, international aviation forces provide assistance in extinguishing fires that continue to spread in several directions.
