In Japan, the authorities lifted the tsunami warning after the strong earthquake that occurred in the afternoon Cyprus time, on the northern coast of the country. Several tidal waves were recorded, with a maximum height of 70 cm.
The American Institute of Geophysics announced that the earthquake that hit Misawa had a magnitude of 7.6 and a focal depth of 53 kilometers. The Japanese Meteorological Agency immediately issued a tsunami warning that could reach up to three meters. A first wave, 40 centimeters high, hit the Aomori region about half an hour after the earthquake. Many other waves followed in other areas, none of which exceeded 70 cm. As public television reported, many people were injured, while residents of the area fled their homes and sought refuge in the town hall.
The government has warned that strong aftershocks may occur in the region in the coming days.
One journalist described the quake as lasting about 30 seconds and was so strong that he had difficulty standing up.
