George Michael - “Singing Greek” with Cyprus roots

Is there something in common between the legendary Christmas hit and sunny kyprom? It turns out yes! One of the most recognizable voices in the history of music that gave Last Christmas to the world is an amazing story about deep roots and cultural heritage. How is the world pop-icon George Michael related to this Mediterranean island?

 The roots and personality of the "singing Greek"

The world pop star, the author of the hit Last Christmas, George Michael, born in London, never forgot about his origin. His real name is Yorgos Kiriacos Panayota. The musician’s father was a Greek ciprot, who emigrated to the UK in the 1950s. George Michael himself more than once proudly called himself "singing Greek", emphasizing his Mediterranean roots.

Although he did not live in Cyprus constantly, this connection was more for him than just a memory: the singer really visited the island. It was in June 1984, when he celebrated his 21st birthday in Cyprus. Then he was at the peak of popularity with the WHAM duo!. During the rest, he gave an interview that he was a noticeable event for the local press and fans. In a conversation, he spoke warmly about his love for the island and the desire to return here as often as possible in order to relax from world glory. This invisible connection with his homeland through his family and culture was an important part of his identity and, possibly, the spark that lit his incredible talent.

 Last Christmas and his heritage

So, the performer, perhaps, is the most famous Christmas hit Last Christmas, is really related to Cyprus. The video for this song, simple in structure, but so atmospheric, has become a hit for more than one decade. By the way, the film of the same name with Emilia Clark was not only inspired by this song, but also received a blessing to shoot from Michael himself.

 More than just a star

George Michael left an indelible mark on world music. His deep vocals, penetrating texts and incredible charisma conquered millions of hearts around the world. He not only created hits, but also actively participated in charity. George Michael was a volunteer, pacifist and philanthropist, donated money to various funds. His work, filled with passion and sincerity, continues to live in the hearts of fans.

His Cypriot roots will forever remain part of his unique story, and he himself is an example of not only an outstanding musician, but also a person with a big heart.
