The Department of Education on Monday, October 14, said it was investigating a case of abuse of a student diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
As it turned out, the boy's father filed a complaint with the police against the principal of Nicosia High School, who confiscated the child's personal diary. According to the parent, his son kept a diary on the advice of a psychologist from the ADHD Association. In it, the boy wrote down situations that caused him stress and anxiety. The man said that the problems began last year due to the fact that teachers were forbidden to let the child out during school hours, even to the toilet.
Having learned about the incident with his son, the father first directly contacted the school principal and asked to return the diary, but was refused, which is why the scandal occurred. Sources in the Ministry of Education confirmed that they had received a complaint and began an investigation into the incident. The head of the ADHD Association in Cyprus, Marina Georgiou, said this was not the first incident that had affected the school and was linked to a lack of understanding of ADHD.
She emphasized that teachers need to become more attuned to the needs of students with ADHD. In turn, the Ministry of Education acknowledged the problem and said it was willing to provide additional training.
