The situation in hospitals in Cyprus is critical.
Press representative of OKYpY Haralambos Harilaou stated this the other day. As it turned out, an outbreak of three viruses at once on the island led to overcrowding of local medical facilities, as well as a shortage of specific antiviral drugs in private pharmacies.
According to Harilaou, there are very serious cases of the disease. Thus, in the intensive care unit of the Nicosia General Hospital, 4 patients aged 43, 66, 67 and 86 years are being treated, whose condition is assessed as critical. In addition, 14 patients with Covid-19 are in isolation in infectious diseases departments of state hospitals. At the same time, the total number of cases is growing rapidly, and there are not enough beds in hospitals.
He noted that the outbreak of viral infections such as RSV (human respiratory syncytial virus), influenza A and coronavirus remains at the same level as during the holidays, while the occupancy rate of public hospitals remains at over 90% and patient attendance in TAEP in all hospitals is twice as high, since now more than 200 patients visit the emergency department alone every day.
“Since OKYPY is a large organization, we make every effort to ensure that every patient is served as quickly as possible. Since the private sector cannot provide this type of care, we decided to increase the number of beds in the pathology and pulmonary departments,” he noted.
The press representative of OKYPY emphasized that with the opening of schools, the peak of the flu is expected to occur at the end of January - beginning of February. At the same time, he urged the population to immediately contact their personal doctors if any symptoms appear. He stressed that everyone should follow basic hygiene rules, and if symptoms of flu or coronavirus appear, they should stay home.
And although the incidence of influenza A has increased recently, there is also a large shortage of antiviral drugs in private pharmacies.
When asked about this, the director of pharmaceutical services, Elena Panagiotopoulou, said that there is a shortage of quantity in the company of the representative who distributes specific drugs in private pharmacies, but there is no shortage in public pharmacies.
“People can go to a public hospital pharmacy and get antiviral drugs for free,” said Panayotopoulou.
