Ariston of the Republic of Cyprus to Professor Phoebe Kountouris

The plenary of the Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts has decided, by a majority, as the Aristotle of Cyprus Aristotelian to Professor Phoebe Kountouris. Professor Kountouris is a distinguished personality with significant and recognized achievements in the economy of sustainability, viability and natural resources. Her work focuses on the development of anthropocentric, interdisciplinary mathematical systems on sustainable interaction between nature, society and the economy.

PhD in Economics at the University of Cambridge, where she worked at the start of her career, then collaborated with University College London, while for the past 20 years she has been a professor at the Athens University of Economics and Business and, from 2022, at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and Visiting Senior Research Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, London School of Economics and Political Science. He directs the Research Laboratory on Socio-Economic and Environmental Sustainability and the Athena Research Center, as well as the Alliance of Excellence for Research Council. Presidents at the World Council of Environmental and Natural Resource Economists Association, SDSN Global Climate Hub, SDSN Europe, in Academia Europaea Task Force on Environment, Sustainability and Climate, while also chairing to IAP's Scientific Committee for Statement on Human Security and the European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists.

He has been elected as a member, among other things, to the following organizations: Academia Europaea, World Academy of Art and Science, European Academy of Sciences and Arts, Academy of Engineering and Technology of the Developing World, European Association of Environmental and Resource Economics, and it is also a fellow of IAP. Recently, on the proposal of the EU, it was invited by the Secretary General. of the UN to take on the honorary position of the team of the team of 15 scientists from around the world, which will prepare the World Exhibition on Sustainable Development 2027. It acts, inter alia, for the UN, G20, International Bank, European Commission, OECD, EBRD, WHO has Council, EU Climate Pact Ambassador, Member of the Eib Climate Leaders Network and a multitude of other organizations. It is of particular importance to appoint it as one of the leaders of the Lancet Covid-19 Commission. It is also an editor in a series of books by Cambridge University Press, Co-Editor at the Springer Nature Environmental and Resource Economics, Associate Editor by Annual Reviews of Resource Economics, Senior Editor Editor by Cambridge Prisms: Water and Field Chief Editor of Frontiers in Environmental Economics.

The decision was taken at the 66th Plenary Session of the Academy on 17.9.2025, on the proposal of the order of the sciences. The excellence of the Republic of Cyprus is awarded to distinguished and leading personalities of the sciences, letters or arts, which have contributed significantly and have recognized achievements in their field. Excellence is a recognition of the personalities associated with Cyprus and have contributed decisively to the development of sciences, letters or arts either in Cyprus or abroad.
