The Plenary Session of the Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts decided to elect Professor Christos K. Tsangalis as Corresponding Member in the Chair of Classical Philology.
An announcement states that Professor Tsangalis is an internationally recognized scholar of archaic epic poetry. His research focuses on Homer, Hesiod and the early epic tradition, with significant contributions to the study of orality, intertextuality and the reception of classical texts.
He has formed a coherent and internationally recognized research project that extends from the study of the "lament" in the Iliad and the intertextuality of the Homeric epics, to the analysis of the lyrical and epigrammatic tradition of mourning, the spatial dimension of the epic narrative and the interpretation of individual episodes, such as the Dolonia.
His monographs in international publishing houses (De Gruyter, Harvard University Press, Oxford University Press), the works included in collective volumes of Oxford and Cambridge University Press, as well as the four-volume series Early Greek Epic Fragments, have established themselves as points of reference in the study of archaic epic poetry, the announcement states.
It is added that his work methodologically renewed philological research, presenting less studied texts and setting new interpretive standards.
Professor Tsangalis has been elected a member of the Academia Europaea, participates in editorial and research boards of international prestige and collaborates with important scientific bodies in Europe and America.
With its multidimensional action, it has substantially strengthened the international presence of Greek classical studies and has contributed to the creation of bridges of cooperation between Greek and foreign academic institutions, the announcement states.
