President Christodoulidis welcomed Norway's decision to lift the arms embargo against Cyprus after 65 years, calling it an important step to strengthen bilateral defense cooperation.
As he reported in a post on the X platform, he was informed by the country's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Espen Barth Eide, in a telephone call.
Nikos Christodoulidis said that Norway has opened applications for the export of material to Cyprus.
A government source told the Cyprus News Agency that the decision is a development of particular political and diplomatic importance.
The embargo was imposed in 1959 as part of Norway's general policy not to export arms to countries where there is war, threat of war or internal strife.
The decision, the same source underlined, is a recognition of the role of the Republic of Cyprus as a reliable partner and security factor in the Eastern Mediterranean.
