Larnaca court sentenced 31-year-old Moldovan citizen to 20 years in prison

25 February Larnaca Criminal Court

sentenced

31-year-old citizen of Moldova to 20 years in prison. He was arrested on 17 April 2025 with 15.06kg of cocaine and 94.96kg of cannabis after a courier service called the police. A record shipment of drugs arrived in Cyprus on a ship from Piraeus.

Employees of a courier company who delivered five parcels to an address in Larnaca found the behavior of the two recipients strange. Officers of the Police Department of the Republic of Cyprus for Combating Drug Trafficking (YKAN) arrived on call and detained a citizen of Moldova red-handed. His accomplice escaped.

The Larnaca court said it took into account all mitigating circumstances: his youth, lack of criminal record, guilty plea, poor financial situation and the fact that he is a chronic drug user and gambling addict. However, due to the serious danger drugs pose to society, the sentence was harsh.

“In recent years, our country has witnessed the illicit trafficking of large volumes of drugs, as a result of which the number of victims, especially among young people, is growing uncontrollably. The distribution of drugs is a social disaster and a threat to the foundations of society, the Larnaca Criminal Court stated.
