Consumers are important to the government and therefore the aim is to secure adequacy and affordable electricity prices, said Minister George Papanastasiou.
In a discussion at the Cyprus Forum, the Energy Minister emphasized that the government must and will complete the gas terminal at the Royal.
He added that, if there is a large divergence of design and construction, the project is redesigned to complete as soon as possible and operate safely due to flammable materials.
Asked whether the competitive electricity market will reduce prices, George Papanastasiou said that no one knows in which direction the cost of a free market will move.
On the electrical interconnection, Mr. Papanastasiou stressed that it is a European project, characteristically saying that "we have no reason to be viable or not".
If we will be, he added, shareholders in this project, is another decision. He pointed out, however, that the issue needs management rather than cancellation of the project.
For the prospects of exploiting the findings in the Cyprus EEZ, the Energy Minister said that Aphrodite and "Saturn" are two mature deposits.
He stressed that the export of natural gas from Saturn in 2027 is a realistic optimistic scenario, but noting that the goal is not easy.
