The plenary of the Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts unanimously decided to elect as an external member, Professor Kyriakos Markides. Professor Markidis was elected at the headquarters of sociology. His work in sociology, and especially in the health of minorities and aging is considered internationally pioneering. He is a Doctor of Sociology at Louisiana State University, serves as Annie and John Gnitzinger Distinguished Professor of Aging in the School of Public and Population Health at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. At the same time he is a Visiting Professor at the University of Nicosia Medical School. He has authored more than 450 high -impact publications, focusing mainly on aging and health, with particular reference to minority groups.
His pioneering research in the epidemiological paradox of the Spanish US minority has determined the development of studies in the field internationally, while his contribution to the health of Mexican Americans through Established Population for the Epidemiological Study of the Elderly is considered to be the top of public health and public sociology. His contribution is also confirmed by the constant receiving competitive funding from the National Institute of Health for more than four decades as a Principal Investigator. He is the editor of the Journal of Aging and Health, one of the most important academic magazines in the field, including scientists with most heterosexual references internationally. He has received a plethora of discrimination, such as Robert W. Kleemeier Award by Gerontological Society of America Recognition of his research in Gerontology.
The decision was taken at the 66th Plenary Session of the Academy on 17.9.2025, on the proposal of the order of moral, economic and political sciences. Under the legislation, the external members of the Academy are distinguished persons who are citizens of the Republic or citizens of other states who are not permanent residents of the Republic who have a recognized essential work, and an international presence similar to that of regular members. The Academy considers that their work and knowledge can contribute to its work and, more broadly, to democracy.
