Open Mic Night all about lying

Open Mic Night all about lying

Is there a better way to celebrate April Fool’s Day than with an Open Mic Night all about big, silly and white lies? This is exactly what is happening at Prozak Kafeneio in Nicosia this Wednesday, inviting performers of all levels and styles to share their stories.

Music, song, spoken word, poetry, rap, stand-up comedy and every other performing art imaginable is welcome at the Open Mic Night: Lies event. With creative freedom and almost no limitations, performers are invited to take the mic and share their best, or worst, lies.

Talking about the theme of the night, organisers say: “Your parents lied to you about Santa Claus, but then you lied to them about that broken TV (it wasn’t the dog). A few years later, you lied to them again, this time about that ‘oregano’ they’d found in your schoolbag. That same semester, you told your boyfriend that you loved him back, but that wasn’t true because your actual first love was your classmate with the curly hair who later lied to you about kissing your best friend underneath that tree you’d carved your initials on, followed by a naive – but nevertheless sweet – BFFE. Guess that was a lie, too.

“In the years that followed, you lied about your job experience, your age, your hair colour, your political views and your drinking habits, and now you lie about how much time you spend doom-scrolling. It’s ok. We all do it. And we are all going to lie through our teeth to celebrate THE day of the lies at Prozak’s Open Mic Night on April 1.”

Except for performing original work in any language in under five minutes and always with respect to others, the event has no other rules. Manning the stage for the evening will be Paul C Hunt, warming up the crowd and welcoming each daring performer.
