The Cyprus Ministry of Health has issued a warning due to increased activity of respiratory viruses on the island.
Seasonal influenza currently accounts for the majority of cases, with people over 65 and other vulnerable groups most at risk.
The department urged citizens to follow preventive measures, including regular and thorough hand washing with soap or using alcohol-based antiseptics, and avoid touching the face - especially the eyes, nose and mouth, through which viruses most often enter the body.
It is recommended to pay special attention to the protection of vulnerable groups of the population. People with chronic illnesses, the elderly, pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems are advised to limit contact with those showing symptoms of respiratory infections. Vaccination remains the most effective way to protect against severe forms of the disease and death.
According to the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), published on November 20, 2025, the overall level of risk for the population of the EU and European Economic Area is assessed as moderate. However, for vulnerable groups the risk remains high. These include people over 65 years of age, patients with chronic metabolic, pulmonary, cardiovascular and neuromuscular diseases, pregnant women, the immunocompromised, and residents of nursing homes and long-term care facilities.
The Cyprus Ministry of Health advises anyone who develops symptoms - a severe cough, fever or runny nose - to stay at home for at least 24 hours after they have disappeared. It is also recommended to cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing with a tissue or the bend of your elbow, wear masks in crowded places and, if necessary, contact your personal doctor.
The ministry emphasized that the situation is under constant monitoring, and the public will be promptly informed of any new recommendations.
