In Mexico, authorities announced the death of drug lord Nemesio Oseguera, who was known by the nickname "El Menzo." According to the Mexican Ministry of Defense, Oseguera was mortally wounded in an army operation in the state of Jalisco.
The military operation sparked a wave of violence in Mexico with cars torched and gunmen blocking highways in at least six states.
The 59-year-old former policeman was the leader of the "Jalisco - Nea Genia" cartel, which in a short time managed to compete with the Sinaloa cartel.
The operation against "El Mencho" followed the pressure exerted by the United States government on Mexico to intensify the crackdown on drug traffickers, even directly threatening Washington's intervention.
