Citizens who mock or curse the disabled or the elderly will face penalties of up to 5 years in prison or a 10,000 euro fine, or both penalties together, as decided by the Parliament's Legal Committee.
The proposal for a law to criminalize hate speech on grounds of age or disability, put forward by AKEL and the independent member of parliament, Alexandra Attalidou, will be brought to the Plenary for a vote.
As said, fourteen member states of the European Union already apply similar legislation.
