Appeals court upholds conviction for 500g cocaine

The appeals court on Thursday threw out the appeals of three men convicted for drug trafficking, upholding the convictions and sentences imposed by the Limassol criminal court, it was made known on Monday.

The criminal court had convicted four individuals, but one chose not to appeal.

The charges included conspiracy to commit a crime and possession with the intent of trafficking over half a kilo of cocaine.

The crimes had been committed in March and April 2020.

The criminal court had found all four guilty and sentenced the men from eight to ten years in prison.

The appellants questioned the evaluation of the evidence and the conclusions of the criminal court, saying the crimes had not been adequately proven.

The appeals court dismissed these arguments and upheld the criminal court’s ruling.

It also ruled that the sentences imposed were within the permitted limits and reflected the seriousness of the offences.

The appeals court also examined the house arrest and pre-trial detention, ruling that the criminal court was right in not considering them as term served, except for one convict, who will have nearly two months taken off his sentence.
